I am pretty demanding about only using natural skincare products, so I was really excited when I heard about Prefense, a non-alcohol hand sanitizer that claims to be all natural.
Ingredients: Amosilq Silica Complex, water, vegetable glycerin, Cocamidopropyl Betane, organic essential oils.
Overall, the ingredient list is pretty good. However, Cocamidopropyl Betane is not an all-natural ingredient, so their advertising is misleading, but greenwashing is pretty common these days since more and more people are starting to demand safer products.
According to the Cosmetics Database:
Cocamidopropyl betaine is a synthetic surfactant; it has been associated with irritation and allergic contact dermatitis, reactions that could be due to the ingredient itself or to impurities present in it, such as 3-dimethylaminopropylamine.
There are 2 claims they make that I really have a problem with:
- Prefense is made of all-natural organic ingredients and has absolutely NO alcohol in it!
- Prefense is non-toxic and safe for kids! It will not hurt you if swallowed!
I don’t know about you, but I don’t want my kids swallowing a synthetic surfactant! While I don’t typically like to write negative reviews, when I feel that a company is using misleading advertising, I don’t have a problem sharing that point of view.
What I do like about this product? It comes out as a foam, so you get more applications of it. But, since it really isn’t all natural like it claims to be, we won’t be using it.
